Product Overview
In 2023-24, Upper Deck is the only company licensed to publish NHL hockey cards. They are expected to publish 25+ products (2 per month(!)) for the 23-24 season. Below is an overview of what most of these products are and what to expect from them.
In addition to these, there are companies (such as Leaf) that publish unlicensed products. These products can contain game used memorabilia and autographed cards of NHL players, but will not show any team logos or NHL logos.
If you are thinking about buying a product you haven't bought before, we strongly recomend that you watch a few breaks of the product on youtube before buying, to know what to expect. There are a few suggestions on youtube resources here.
Entry Level Products
MVP
The most inexpensive product of them all offers a 250 card base set where the last 50 are shortprinted Stars (20) and Rookies (30), and a number of inserts as well as a few parallels. As it is the first release of the season, all the 30 rookies are players who skated during the last season (carry-over rookies). There are very rare redemptions to get, of the top rookies from the current season - that were yet to skate at the time of production. There are also some numbered cards, die cuts and even very rare (sticker) autos.
Hobby-box configuration: 8 cards per pack, 20 packs per box
Expect: A surprisingly nice product with a little bit of everything.
Pros: Nice entry level set and introduction to hockey cards, players and teams. The most inexpensive product available. Almost no redemptions.
Cons: Price has increased substantially over the past few years. As of 22-23 there are no player stats on the back of the cards. Very hard to hit a card that carries value on the secondary market, allthough there are exceptions. No memorabilia cards.
2023-24 Release Day Price in Sweden: 749 SEK, (73 USD)
2024-25 Release Day Price in Sweden: 779 SEK, (76 USD)
O-Pee-Chee
Classic OPC paper has been around forever and has an old-school touch to it. Carrying a massive 600 card base set, a bunch of parallels and inserts, it's main appeal lies with set collectors and people who like the old school design. As of the last two years it is released later in the season, which means it has many of the top rookies from the current season, and not just carry-over rookies.
Hobby-box configuration: 10 cards per pack, 18 packs per box
Expect: A really fun box to open and some rare hit cards to chase.
Pros: Lots of cards, huge base set including players who normally don't get cards in a set. No redemptions. Big variation with classic Marquee Rookie cards, numbered cards, inserts and rare chase cards
Cons: No autos, no memorabilia cards. Normally, not many cards carry value on the secondary market
2023-24 Release Day Price in Sweden: 895 SEK, (87 USD)

Series 1 / Series 2 / Extended
The most expensive of the entry level products, Upper Decks flagship product comes in three installments throughout the season - carrying the Young Guns rookie cards and a massive set up of inserts and parallels. This is the most sold (and most overproduced) of all of Upper Decks products. Each product carries a 200 card base set + 50 young guns, except for Extended series which has a slightly different configuration and more focus on reviving old card designs.
Hobby-box configuration: 12 cards per pack, 12 packs per box
Expect: FOMO in the hobby and a massive chase for Young Guns for the first couple of months, until things settle down and secondary market prices of the cards drop significantly.
Pros: Lots of variation with a huge array of inserts and parallels. If you hit the right Young Guns card you can make a decent amount of money on the secondary market, especially if it's close to release. No redemptions.
Cons: There are autos somewhere in this product but they are so rare they are almost impossible to hit. No memorabilia cards anymore.

- Series 1: 1595 SEK, (155 USD)
- Series 2: 1795 SEK, (174 USD)
- Extended: 1595 SEK (155 USD)

Mid-End Products
Artifacts
Artifacts carries memorabilia cards, several different tech cards and roughly a 50 % chance of an autograph, as well as many numbered parallels. It has a base set comprised of "regular players", stars, goalies and legends.
Hobby-box configuration: 4 cards per pack, 8 packs per box
Expect: Something fun in every pack. Lots of parallels that all look almost exactly the same with only subtle differences. Sticker autos. Memorabilia cards.
Pros: Nice set with a little bit of everything.
Cons: Redemptions. Parallels are only subtlely different from each other. Typically only one rookie card per box.
2023-24 Release Day Price in Sweden: 1495 SEK, (145 USD)
2024-25 Release Day Price in Sweden: 1595 SEK, (150 USD)
Allure
Making it's debut in the 2019-20 season, Allure is a relatively new product. Cards are printed on chromium stock, just like OPC Platinum, but the product carries a smaller base-set and 50 rookies, compared to OPC Platinums 100 rookies. The 2022-23 version saw an overhaul with more hits per pack and with super-dazzling card designs.
Hobby-box configuration: 8 cards per pack, 8 packs per box
Expect: Shiny chromium cards, alluring card designs, die cuts and one auto per box. One rookie card per pack. Color-flow parallels, for rainbow set-building.
Pros: Parallels look fantastic. Rich in color and super sparkly and shiny. Since 22-23 all base cards have been rainbows. 50 rookies on the checklist compared to OPC Platinums 100 means you have a higher chance of hitting a rookie who won't spend their entire career in the AHL.
Cons: If you disslike chromium cards you won't like this product. Memorabilia cards are extremely rare.

Black Diamond
A mid-end product with very few cards, dressed in a pretend-high-end pricing and packaging.
Hobby-box configuration: 6 cards per pack, 1 packs per box
Expect: A severly overpriced high stakes, hit-or-miss product with some really cool and beautiful cards.
Pros: Some of the card designs look great. Some really cool tech cards, including cards that have (industrially made) diamonds in them. One of three products that carry the Exquisite Collection subset cards.
Cons: Sold at roughly the same price as Premier, which is an actual high-end product. Sticker autos. Manufactured patches. Hit-or-miss-product. Not guaranteed an auto. Redemptions.
2022-23 Release Day Price in Sweden: 3095 SEK, (300 USD)
2023-24 Release Day Price in Sweden: 3995 SEK, (388 USD)
Clear Cut
The most hit-or-miss product of all, with only one card per box.
Hobby-box configuration: 1 card per box
Expect: One autographed card, in a one-touch, using designs from all sorts of Upper Deck products. Or a redemption.
Pros: Guaranteed an autograph. There are some super rare low numbered cards of great players available.
Cons: Despite the products name, not all cards are actually clear cuts. The checklist is big and there's a high risk that you pull a card with considerably lower secondary market value than the price of the box.
2022-23 Release Day Price in Sweden: 1095 SEK, (106 USD)
Credentials
Nice base card design and many numbered parallels. Probably most known for their Debut Ticket Access cards, which are rookie cards that look like an old-school paper ticket.
Hobby-box configuration: 6 cards per pack, 8 packs per box
Expect: A 200 card base set, which includes 100 rookies. Base cards with cool design.
Pros: Lots of parallels and inserts, high chance of a clear cut and the chance of an autograph. There are hardsigned rookie autos in this product.

Expect: 1 hard-signed auto per box. The only product that carries game used stick memorabilia.
Pros: 1 guaranteed hit per box. Hardsigned autos. A chance at game used stick memorabilia.
Cons: The price. Only guranteed 1 hit in a box (an auto, no guarantees of a stick memorabilia card)

ICE
ICE is one of three products that carry cards from the Exquisite Collection Set. It also hosts the ICE Premier rookie cards. Card design is made to resemble ice or cracked ice, and many inserts and parallels have an ice-theme.

OPC Platinum
One of the more popular products, it utilizes the base set design from OPC paper, but prints the cards on Chromium Stock.
Hobby-box configuration: 12 cards per pack, 12 packs per box
Expect: A primarily parallel-driven product, that has some long standing, classic hobby cards to chase - such as the Seismic Gold parallel. 1 hardsigned autograph per box
Pros: If you like chromium cards, you will love this product. Lots and lots of parallels. 1 guaranteed hard signed auto per box. Generally decent value on the second hand market of some of the better cards.
Cons: The product has a 100 card rookie set, meaning your hardsigned auto is likely to be of a player who will spend most of his career in the AHL. Box prices has been increased more than for other products, over the past few years. More expensive than SP Authentic, which guarantees 2 autos per box.
2022-23 Release Day Price in Sweden: 2295 SEK, (223 USD)
2023-24 Release Day Price in Sweden: 2995 SEK, (290 USD)
Parkhurst Champions
This product made it's debut in 2022-23. The Parkhurst brand has been used for many years as a Retail product. Now, Upper Deck takes it to the Hobby-market.
Hobby-box configuration: 8 cards per pack, 20 packs per box
Expect: A vintage looking set with odern day players. A set builders set, with a big base set, parallels and some inserts. Each box guarantees an auto or a memorabilia card.
Pros: If you are a set collector, and want more than a big base set to chase, here's a product which in addition to the big base set delivers 7 different parallels + a chance at auto, patch and patch-auto parallels. Also: Inserts.
Cons: If you disslike the old-school Parkhurst design look, this may not be the product for you. No guaranteed auto.

SP Authentic
Home of the Future Watch Autos, probably the second most collected rookie card in the hobby, after Young Guns. In recent years the third and last installement of Young Guns have moved away from SP Authentic to Extended series, which has removed a sought after hit from the product.
Hobby-box configuration: 9 cards per pack, 10 packs per box
Expect: A classic card design, Future Watch cards and additional autograph content.
Pros: Hardsigned autographs. At least 2 autos per box. Patch cards to chase.
Cons: The price of the product is higher than most mid-end products. Recent years increased production runs, and the move of Young Guns cards to Extended series, has lead to an increase of filler inserts with little or no secondary market value, and several new Future Watch parallels. Redemptions.
2022-23 Release Day Price in Sweden: 1995 SEK, (193 USD)
SP Game Used
You would think a product named "Game Used" would exclusively be carrying game used memorabilia cards, but no. They are in there, but you are far more likely to pull a manufactured patch or a piece of something labeled an "event-used banner", whatever that is.
Hobby-box configuration: 6 cards per pack, 1 pack per box
Expect: An overpriced product with more manufactured memorabilia than you would expect, given the product's name.
Pros: Chance of an autograph. Some cool card designs. Home of Draft Day Marks, which are manufactured letterman-patch cards, showing one of the letters in a players name.
Cons: Despite the price you are not guaranteed an auto. Sticker autos.
2023-24 Release Day Price in Sweden: 2295 SEK, (223 USD)
SPX
SPX is a tech card heavy product, and one of three products that carry cards from the Exquisite Collection set. It's also the only product to carry cards from the UD Black set. Home of the Shadow Box Rookies which are arguably the coolest looking rookie card across all products.

Expect: An expensive product with few cards and some cool tech card designs.
Pros: Guaranteed auto. The rest of the cards will mostly be memorabilia or tech cards. Some great card designs. Small chance of an RPA, if you hit the UD Black RPAs.

Expect: Base cards with outer space backgrounds, some great looking inserts, one base rookie card per pack.

Stature
Stature made it's debut in the 2019-20 season and is the third of Upper Decks chromium sets (the others being OPC Platinum and Allure). This one is printed on thicker, 75 pt stock. As with the lastest installment of Allure, all base cards are Rainbows
Hobby-box configuration: 8 cards per pack, 1 pack per box
Expect: Thicker cards, with great design. chromium shinyness, and an absolutely mental checklist with so many parallels, photo variations and photo variation parallels that you struggle to think a sober person has come up with it.
Pros: At least one hardsigned auto, potentially two. Great design.
Cons: 2 out of 8 cards are base cards. Unspectacular inserts. Expensive - the same price as an Ultimate box. Checklist requires a PhD to understand.
2022-23 Release Day Price in Sweden: 1995 SEK, (193 USD)
Synergy
A very different product were every card in every pack is a parallel or an insert - if you're not lucky enough to hit one of the base cards, because in this product the base - and not the parallels - are numbered. And they are numbered to the same as the season, so in 2023-24 they should be numbered to /24. It also has cards made of metal.
Hobby-box configuration: 3 cards per pack, 8 pack per box
Expect: Acetate and paper fused cards of thicker stock, lots of numbered cards, lots of clear cuts and shiny inserts.
Pros: Cheapest product in the mid-end segment. Maybe also the most fun product, as there are many fun inserts and numbered parallels. Every card is a "hit". About a 50 % chance to get an auto, and about a 30 % chance to get a metal card.

High-End Products
The Cup
The holy grail of hockey cards and the most expensive product to buy, by far. The Cup carries some amazing, mind-blowing cards but is a high-stakes gamble. Pull the wrong cards and you could walk away with a secondary market value of almost nothing.

Pros: A guaranteed RPA, several autos in a box. The most amazing cards available in the hobby, including super rare auto and memorabilia cards of legends, rookies and veterans. Up until recently an exlusively hard-signed autograph product, but in the last season there has been sticker autos for a few players.
Cons: More than 3 times more expensive than the second most expensive high-end product. Hit-or-miss product. Redemptions.
